RDP's Data Defence™ expert Kerry Beynon in the spotlight
Leading South East Wales magazine 'The Business' puts Dr Beynon in the spotlight with their twenty questions feature.
Who are you and what do you do?
Dr Kerry Beynon, Partner, RDP Law
1. What was your first Saturday job?
My very first job, which was actually 7 days a week, was a paper round. On my 13th birthday my Dad took me to the newsagents to announce that as a birthday present, he had got me a paper round! You couldn’t make it up, but I’m not complaining (much).
2. What motivates you?
Helping people in a positive way.
3. And what irritates you?
When people fail to appreciate my creative endeavours. For example, I once entered a fancy-dress triathlon dressed as a seagull and someone interpreted my outfit as a fairy.I thought I’d made a good effort!
4. What one wish would you grant to Gwent and why?
Newport is already a centre of excellence for cyber security. If I could grant Gwent one wish it would be that every business sector in Gwent would have the international recognition that it deserves.
5. Who do you most admire in business and why?
If I think of business as being a “brand”, the one brand that I most admire is the “Serena Williams” brand. She has overcome some difficult situations and has risen to the top of her game. She’s a real ambassador for what can be achieved if you work hard enough and sport is after all “big business”.
6. Rugby v football – why
Rugby every time.I don’t understand the rules of football.
7. What was the last book you read and what did you think?
I read the GDPR official text from start to finish for the umpteenth time recently.I thought that it gets better every time I read it.
8. What do you do to relax?
I like to try something new.Zip wiring under ground was fun.It may not sound relaxing to some, but I find new challenges a great way to unwind.
9. What dreams are you still to fulfil?
To buy a Citroen 2CV – the little old cars with flip down windows and a roll back roof.I have wanted one of those since I was a small child!
10. What was the last film you saw at the cinema and what did you think?
Stan and Ollie – I thought it was very thought provoking and actually quite moving.
11. Favourite food and place to eat it?
I love seafood. My favourite place to eat it would be anywhere with friends.
12. What car do you drive?
13. What one song would you have on your iPod?
Rascall Flatts “My Wish”.It has a lovely message.
14. Coffee v tea – why
Coffee – lattes are wonderful.
15. What’s your favourite TV programme past or present?
The Good Place.I am a comedy fan.

17. If you were an animal, what would you be?
18. Proudest moment?
When my daughter was born.
19. And most embarrassing?
When I first passed my driving test I took my car out for a spin with friends.I took the wrong exit from the roundabout and ended up on the motorway (which is not what I had planned as I had never driven on the motorway before!)My car then broke down.I used one of the roadside telephones to call for help and the person on the end of the line asked if I had just passed my test as they could see me on the roadside camera.I was obviously behaving as a complete novice in distress.
20. What advice would you give to someone wanting to be successful in your line of work?
Be prepared to put in a lot of hard work and long hours. However, the law is diverse, so if you can find the right opportunity, you can specialise in an area of law that is linked to your interests and hobbies.Your subject then becomes your passion.
